Frass is known to feed micro-organisms. The bacteria in this study produce secondary metabolites with promote plant health.
This article is a little complicated, the take away is that chitinase triggers plant's self-defense mechinisms. Chitinase is an enzyme produced bacteria that eat chitin Frass provides a source of chitin.
